On November 26, 2019 Keyano College held its annual Student Award. Allan Jansen, Terracon’s General Manager of Field Services, was asked to participate in the ceremony along with dignitaries from Keyano. Along with the honour of being asked to speak to the students and their invited guests of the event, Allan also presented the second annual Lee Nichols Environmental Studies Award to Rebecca Turner.
Terracon continues to promote its own long standing commitment to employing students and graduates and providing them with practical field based experience in the region. Terracon firmly believes that the community’s young minds play a vital role in understanding and contributing to the responsible development of our natural resources and protection of our environment.
Terracon is pleased to announce that we have recently purchased new Pile Driving Analyzer® (PDA) system equipment.
The Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) system is the most widely employed system for Dynamic Load Testing and Pile Driving Monitoring in the world. High Strain Dynamic Load Tests, also called PDA tests, assess the capacity of several piles in a single day. Pile Driving Analyzer systems also evaluate shaft integrity, driving stresses, and hammer energy when monitoring installation.
The purpose of the High-Strain Dynamic Pile Testing is to determine the force and velocity response of individual vertical or batter pile to an impact force applied axially by a pile driving hammer or similar device that will cause a large strain impact to the top of the pile, in accordance with ASTM D-4945-00. The data is also used to conduct CAPWAP analysis for the pile. This test method is applicable to deep foundation units that function in a manner similar to foundation piles, regardless of their method of installation provided that they are receptive to high strain impact testing.
Our well trained and certified team together with our previous work experience will guarantee to deliver high quality services to our clients, and performing independent verification testing and analysis.
PDA services can provide clients with foundation cost savings through time and material efficiencies. Terracon PDA services include Driveability Study, Wave Equation Analysis (WEAP), Dynamic Pile Testing (PDA), Signal Matching Analysis (CAPWAP®), Hammer Performance, Pile Damage Identification, Total Ultimate Static Resistance (Bearing Capacity), Engineering Recommendations (Driving Criteria), and Independent Verification Testing.
We are honoured to be presented with the 2018 Silver Partner and Employee Involvement Awards from United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo. Although it is Terracon’s name on the award, this was a result of our employees dedicating their own time and money individually and Terracon matching contributions to the cause. The campaign was spearheaded by Ernest Arsenault and a former employee on a 100% volunteer basis.
Thank you for your dedication to this cause and for bringing such a positive experience to Terracon!
Terracon is pleased to welcome Nathan Grey, P. Eng as Environmental Services Manager (Fort McMurray). He has a wealth of experience in the tailings, environmental monitoring and wildlife fields and has held several technical and managerial roles throughout his career.
As part of our manager team in Fort McMurray, Nathan will be able to use his experience to support our current environmental monitoring services for bird/nest surveys, groundwater and soil reclamation as well as grow our environmental services line. We are excited to announce, Andrew Taylor has been promoted to Senior Manager, Shared Services and Special Projects. Andrew joined Terracon in 2009 as the Fleet Coordinator and quickly found success in cost reduction, creating efficiencies, and developing our fleet management system. Shortly after, he took on the added responsibility for Logistics, IT and Facilities as an Operations Coordinator. In 2013, Andrew joined the management team as Manager of Operational Support. In 2016, Andrew transferred to the Calgary office and continued to add to his responsibilities in support of all of Terracon’s operating centres. Keith has been promoted to Branch Manager, Field Services and will be responsible for field service operations in Central and Southern AB as well as our newly opened office in Terrace, BC. Keith has been a dedicated Terracon employee for nearly 21 years and has proven to be a valuable asset to his clients in the Wood Buffalo region working on most of the sites as a Construction Monitor, Trainer and Supervisor. Keith was integral in the opening our Nisku office, literally putting the walls up around him! Keith understands the hard work and dedication required to make our employees and clients successful and places a strong emphasis on safety and technical proficiency. One of Terracon’s key strategies is the continued build out of new operating centres and integration with existing ones, and so we are excited to have Keith’s experience and leadership on this important strategy.
We are pleased to announce Laura Normore’s promotion to Chief Geologist. Laura will continue to provide technical support to both the geoscience team in Calgary, and the field geologists/geological technologists working on the Field Services Team in Fort McMurray. Laura will also continue to develop Terracon’s geological and geoscience business in the oil sands and throughout western Canada in support of Terracon’s strategic plan. Laura has worked with Terracon for more than 18 years and has played a vital role in developing Terracon’s geoscience and geological technical expertise, including ore body evaluation, geological mapping and cross-section interpretation, geological modeling and block modeling, drilling programs, core description, and numerous heavy oil related geological assessments. Additionally, Laura has extensive expertise in oil sands mine development, limestone, coal and massive sulphide ore bodies. It is a great honour to work with Laura and we look forward to continued success in her new role.
With the award of our first scope of work in northwest British Columbia, Terracon has established a new branch office in Terrace, BC, approximately 40 minutes north of Kitimat. This office is a show of Terracon’s long-term commitment to the region, and work is already underway by Terracon’s management and business development teams to establish ourselves as a new provider of geotechnical, geological, environmental and civil QA/QC services in the region. There are a multitude of mining and other resource projects slated to begin over the next few years in the Terrace/Kitimat region, and to the north in the so-called “Golden Triangle” of BC, and Terracon is excited to now be in a position to provide our services to new clients and projects in the area. In addition to the office being opened, we have moved a mobile soils and concrete laboratory to the region to support our clients and their local projects.
